El Pueblo de las Esferas de Cristal
México es un lugar lleno de magia y es posible encontrarla en los lugares más escondidos. El fin de semana pasado, mi hermana y yo decidimos escaparnos a un pueblito en Michoacán, anunciado como Pueblo Mágico (denominación utilizada para nombrar lugares con algún atractivo, turístico, cultural o histórico) que además decía tener una feria de esferas navideñas: Tlalpujahua.
Salimos el viernes en carro, un pequeño viaje de poco más de dos horas. Casi no había letreros que indicaran la ruta que pretendíamos seguir, pero la voz de google nos ayudó a llegar sin mayor problema.
El camino estuvo lleno de paisajes con mucho encanto, pasamos del semi-desierto al bosque, y atravesamos varios poblados llenos de artesanías.
Al llegar nos sorprendimos mucho, el lugar es precioso, rodeado de un bosque montañoso, calles empedradas y estrechas, casas pintorescas y puestos de artesanías y sobre todo esferas navideñas por doquier.
Comimos en un restaurante muy pequeño, la comida fue muy buena y el precio moderado, caminamos un poco y nos dirigimos al hotel que habíamos reservado. "El Encanto". Como su nombre lo dice, el lugar es muy bonito y acogedor. Hay que estacionar el carro en la calle y caminar por un pasillo, al final del pasillo hay un jardín muy bien cuidado que tiene algunas mesas perfectas para disfrutar el atardecer y dos pisos con cuartos pequeños pero muy limpios y acogedores. En el segundo piso, la vista es muy bonita, se ve parte del pueblo y el bosque. Lo mejor de todo son los dueños del hotel, gente muy amable que está dispuesta a compartir sugerencias, anécdotas y hasta un poco de historia del lugar.
Por la noche salimos a tomar un té a un lugar llamado la terraza, justo arriba de una tienda navideña muy bonita. Pasamos un rato muy agradable y regresamos a descansar.
Por la mañana, dejamos el hotel para ir a desayunar, estacionamos el carro frente a la iglesia principal y empezamos a caminar. Pronto nos dimos cuenta que todo el pueblo estaba convertido en una especie de mercado sobre ruedas en donde podías encontrar desde ollas de barro, conservas, miel, pan de pueblo, licores caseros, hierbas, especias, flores, fuentes y esculturas de cantera, objetos de vidrio soplado y por supuesto esferas y artesanías navideñas que llenaban de vida y color a todo el lugar.
Recorrimos las calles comprando lindos objetos a un precio moderado, disfrutamos un delicioso pan de naranja y probamos dulce de higo y miel de abeja natural.
Después de mucho caminar, regresamos al carro y decidimos recorrer puestos de cantera que habíamos visto en la carretera. La experiencia es sublime, el trabajo de la cantera es muy bonito y los talleres están al aire libre y con el hermoso bosque tras de ellos. ¡Queríamos traernos todas las fuentes! Compramos algunas, tomé algunas fotos y sobre todo disfruté respirar esa mezcla de aroma de tierra, agua y bosque.
En el camino, encontramos un lugar anunciado como Fábrica de Esferas Naviart, decidimos entrar y nos encontramos con una linda tienda llena de esferas muy bien presentadas y con diseños originales que no habíamos visto en el pueblo. Nos explicaron que la familia lleva toda la vida dedicándose a trabajar el vidrio soplado y que incluso ofrecen demostraciones en su taller. Ya no teníamos tiempo de ir, pero por supuesto esperamos regresar.
A 10 minutos del pueblo, se encuentra un lugar llamado El oro, lugar que solía dedicarse a la minería y otro más, Tlalpujahuilla, en donde hay un convento de cantera. Esperábamos visitar también esos lugares, pero fue tan grande nuestra sorpresa con Tlalpujahua, que no tuvimos más tiempo, ¡seguro volveremos pronto!
Tips.
Usa zapatos cómodos, las calles son empedradas y todo el pueblo está lleno de subidas.
Procura llevar un sombrero o sombrilla, la temperatura es agradable pero a medio día el sol es fuerte. Tampoco olvides un suéter, en la noche hace frío.
La feria de la esfera comienza en Septiembre y termina a mediados de Diciembre, sin embargo, hay esferas todo el año en los talleres particulares.
Reserva tu hotel con tiempo sobre todo si vas en fines de semana, el lugar es pequeño y los hoteles se saturan con frecuencia.
Investiga si hay algún festival interesante, nos platicaron que tienen uno sobre películas de terror y otro sobre cerámica en barro.
Si es temporada de mariposas monarca, planea tu visita a algún santuario, hay varios muy cerca.

Glass Spheres's Little Town
Mexico is a place full of magic and it is possible to find it in the most hidden places. Last weekend, my sister and I decided to escape to a small town in Michoacán, advertised as 'Pueblo Mágico' (name given to places with touristic, cultural or historical interest) It also claimed to have a fair of Christmas spheres: Tlalpujahua.
We left Friday by car, a small road trip of little more than two hours. There were almost no signs indicating the route we wanted to follow, but the 'google voice' helped us arrive without major problems.
The road was full of charming landscapes, we went from the semi-desert to the forest, and crossed several villages full of crafts.
Upon arrival we were very surprised, the place is beautiful, surrounded by a mountainous forest, cobbled and narrow streets, picturesque houses and craft stalls and especially Christmas spheres everywhere.
We ate in a very small restaurant, the food was very good and the price moderate, we walked a little and went to the hotel we had booked. "El encanto". As the name says, the place is really charming. You have to park your car in the street and walk down a corridor, at the end of wich there is a well-kept garden that has some perfect tables to enjoy the sunset and two floors with small but very clean and cozy rooms. On the second floor, the view is very beautiful, you can see part of the town and the forest. The best of all are the owners of the hotel, very friendly people who are willing to share suggestions, anecdotes and even a little history about the town.
At night we went out for a cup of tea and a piece of cake at a place called the terrace, just above a very nice Christmas shop. We had a great time and returned to rest.
In the morning, we leave the hotel to go to breakfast, we park the car in front of the main church and we start walking. Soon we realized that the whole town was converted into a kind of market on wheels where you could find from clay pots, preserves, honey, village bread, homemade liquors, herbs, spices, flowers, fountains and quarry sculptures, objects of blown glass and of course spheres and Christmas crafts that filled the place with life and color.
We walked the streets buying beautiful objects at a moderate price, enjoyed a delicious orange bread and tasted fig candy and natural honey.
After walking a while, we returned to the car and decided to go through quarry stands that we had seen beside the road. The experience is sublime, the work of the quarry is very beautiful and the workshops are outdoors with the beautiful forest behind them. We wanted to bring everything with us! We bought some stuff, I took some photos and above all we enjoyed breathing that mixture of earth, water and forest essense.
On the way, we found a place announced as Naviart Sphere Factory, we decided to enter and we found a nice shop full of very well presented spheres and original designs that we had not seen in the town. They explained that the family has spent a lifetime dedicating themselves to working with blown glass and that they even offer demonstrations in their workshop. We no longer had time to go, but of course we hope to return.
10 minutes from the town, there is a place called El Oro, a place that used to be dedicated to mining and another place, Tlalpujahuilla, where there is a quarry convent. We expected to visit those places too, but our surprise was so great with Tlalpujahua, that we did not have any more time, we'll be back soon!
Tips
• Wear comfortable shoes, they have cobblestone streets and the whole town is full of climbs.
• Try to bring a hat or umbrella, the temperature is nice but at noon the sun is strong. Do not forget a sweater either, at night it's cold.
• The sphere fair begins in September and ends in mid-December, however, there are spheres throughout the year in private workshops and stores.
• Book your hotel with time especially if you go on weekends, the place is small and hotels are frequently saturated.
• Look for any interesting festivals that might be happening, they told us that they have one about horror movies and another about clay pottery.
• If it is monarch butterflies season, plan your visit to a sanctuary, there are several very close.
